A CT 501(c)3 non-profit
The Garland Trust Association was founded by a set of alumni of Yale College who value the proud extracurricular traditions of social, political, and intellectual life. The GTA sponsors educational initiatives centered around intellectual, aesthetic, and philosophical debate in the Yale community by creating space for respectful debate. While such endeavors often begin on campus, the board members and supporters of the GTA see them as for life at least. Consequently, the GTA seeks to create fraternal bonds among Yale alumni and students.
The Garland Trust Association is a non-profit, 501(c)3 which manages and stewards your gifts. All contributions to the Garland Trust are tax deductible to the extent fully allowed by law.
Purchased by the Garland Trust Association in early 2019, the 348 Elm Street house was built in 1801. Formerly used as off-campus housing, we have renovated every square foot of the property to create a space ideal for debates, toasting sessions, and other debate-centric activities just steps from campus.
Since 2014, we have received generous donations from nearly 100 alumni. With this base of support we were able to secure a loan on favorable terms to purchase and renovate the house. In the years ahead we will need to repay this loan with the financial assistance of as many alumni as possible. We will also need ongoing funds to operate and maintain the space.
Our Board of Directors draws from Yale College graduates over the past 4 decades, including political consultants, lawyers, doctors, entrepreneurs, veterans, and researchers. We seek a broad range of political and philosophical views and look to create space for debate rather than igniting it, and we recieve no compensation for our time.
The debate hall centers around a soaring, two-story debate floor with balcony above, with the Chancellory on the main floor, the library upstairs, and bathrooms and a smaller space in the basement.
The Garland Trust accepts cash contributions, cryptocurrency, and low cost basis stocks. Donating through a donor-advised fund is easy and we naturally accepts bequests. If you would like to give in one of these ways, our Treasurer will be happy to assist, so please don't hesitate to email or call. Alternately, consider giving here via PayPal.
